Students, parents and teachers at several elementary schools in Bellevue will stride together on Wednesday, Oct. 10, for the annual Walk to School Day. The event encourages safe walking, healthier students and connected neighborhoods.

The nationwide event has grown steadily in Bellevue since it was introduced in 2002. This year, 11 elementary schools will take part, including Wilburton Elementary School, the first brand new (non-replacement) school added in the Bellevue School District since 1972.

Other participating schools include Ardmore, Bennett, Cherry Crest, Eastgate, Medina, Newport Heights, Phantom Lake, Somerset, Stevenson and Woodridge.

Transportation staff and Police work with the school district and Parent, Teacher Student Association volunteers to coordinate Walk to School Day. In years past, hundreds of students have taken part in activities such as volunteer-led "walking school buses" and park-and-walks from a common meeting area.

An important purpose of Walk to School day is to promote walking as an active, safe and healthy way to get around. Other benefits include decreased congestion around schools and lower rates of tardiness.

Information is available at Walk Bike to School; or contact Rebecca Rodni, Neighborhood Traffic Safety Services (425-452-6160 or rrodni@bellevuewa.gov).

    SchoolPool offers commute options
Also of possible interest to residents with younger children is Bellevue SchoolPool, a program that encourages families and students to explore sustainable transportation options for their commute to and from school.

For the 2018-2019 school year, SchoolPool is offered to all elementary schools in the Bellevue School District. Schools can opt to participate. Learn more at Bellevue SchoolPool or email BellevueSchoolPool@bellevuewa.gov.

Bellevue SchoolPool is a partnership between the City of Bellevue, Bellevue School District, King County and TransManage.
