In recognition and support of National Fire Prevention Week, the Bellevue Fire Department will host its annual open house at all nine fire stations on Saturday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year’s theme, “Every Second Counts – Plan 2 Ways Out,” focuses on how fast you need to get out of your home in case of fire. Fire spreads so fast, you may have less than two minutes to get out safely after a smoke alarm sounds.

Here are seven steps for practicing a home escape plan, shared as part of the National Fire Protection Association’s “Every Second Counts” campaign:

    1. Draw a floor plan map of you home. Include all doors and windows.
    2. Find two ways out of every room.
    3. Make sure doors and windows are not blocked.
    4. Choose an outside meeting place in front of your home, away from the building.
    5. Push the test button to sound the smoke alarm.
    6. Practice your drill with everyone in the home.
    7. Get outside to your meeting place.

More information on escape plans is available at www.firepreventionweek.org.

Residents are encouraged to come by any fire station and take pictures, tour the fire engines, ask questions of firefighters, try a fire extinguisher, see a “hands-only” CPR demonstration and try on firefighter gear. At stations 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9, you can observe a stove-top fire demonstration, where firefighters will provide tips on how to properly extinguish a kitchen fire. Also, at all the stations, kids can enter for a chance to win our “Red Hot Ride to School” contest.
