A water line was struck, resulting in a turbid plume in Lake Washington, and residents from the south end at 5600 Pleasure Point Lane to the north end at Newcastle Beach Park (shown on map below) are experiencing discolored water with sediment. Crews are cleaning the impacted storm structures and expect water quality to improve by the morning of Saturday, May 10. People and pets are advised not to enter the water while it is cloudy. Bellevue drivers can get their vehicles checked free for leaks by participating repair shops this month as part of a new regional program called "Don't Drip and Drive."

The free inspection (valued at up to $80) is especially recommended for 2005 or older vehicles. If there is a problem with the vehicle, the driver will receive a coupon for 10 percent off service (up to $50) to fix the problem, for a total savings of up to $130 between inspection and service. All participating technicians are members of the Automotive Service Association (ASA) to ensure they meet ASA's standards of quality.

In March, City of Bellevue and Boeing employees participated in a pilot program. Of 80 cars tested in the City Hall parking garage, five leaks were detected. Of 911 cars tested at Boeing, 100 leaks were detected. Collectively, small leaks can be a huge component of stormwater pollution.

Bellevue's Stream Team Program Administrator Laurie Devereaux highlighted a few reasons why this campaign offers real value to the average driver in the community. "Dripping fluids cause environmental and safety issues, as well as affecting vehicle longevity and reliability," said Devereaux. "Oil leaks are the most common of all vehicle leaks. The colorful oil sheens in stormwater runoff contribute to surface and groundwater pollution. Remember that Puget Sound Starts Here: do your part and keep your vehicle well maintained and leak-free."

Devereaux continued, "If the repair is within your budget, get it fixed immediately. This will prolong the life of your vehicle, protecting your investment as well as our waterways. If you are unable to repair the leak right away, place cardboard, drip pans or newspaper under your car while it is parked until you can get it fixed.

"Studies show that 67 percent of drivers who find a leak will fix it, so Devereaux noted this program is really about arming people with the information to make smart choices for their families' budget and well-being.

Protecting Puget Sound is also a key part of "Don’t Drip and Drive." Not only does solving vehicle leaks help families care for their cars, over the long run, it also is good for the environment.

The following repair shops in Bellevue are offering free visual inspections during April; other participating shops are located throughout the region. Check www.fixcarleaks.org.
