Plus, welcoming new members of Human Services, Planning Transportation commissions
The City Council Tuesday approved proposed code changes to align Bellevue’s housing policies with new state middle housing legislation. In 2023, the state Legislature passed house bills 1110 and 1337, which require cities like Bellevue to allow more housing types and density in residential areas to expand housing choices, improve affordability and increase supply. Cities must adopt the necessary code changes by June 30.
On May 13, the council received a briefing on land use code amendments recommended by Bellevue’s Planning Commission to support citywide middle housing development citywide and comply with state law. During that discussion, councilmembers asked questions and requested additional information about the state’s minimum requirements in contrast to the Planning Commission’s recommendations.
On Tuesday, councilmembers reviewed the additional information and, following discussion, provided direction for the final ordinance that will incorporate all the proposed changes to Bellevue’s code.
Final action on the proposed amendments will take place at a future meeting. A video replay of the full presentation and discussion is available on Bellevue Television, with supporting documents included in the meeting materials.
New members for city commissions
The council approved appointments of new members to serve on the Human Services, Planning, and Transportation commissions.
Volunteers on Bellevue’s council-appointed boards and commissions provide detailed study and recommendations to the council on important policy matters.
Proclamation for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
In other business, the council proclaimed June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 to recognize the increasing and serious problem that affects health and human rights of older adults in our community.
