People line up for lunch at Momo's Kebabs food truck, which is parked at City Hall..

The City of Bellevue is extending its successful food truck pilot program. A rotation of 11 different trucks offering a variety of cuisines will be at City Hall Plaza Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. through Oct. 31.

The program received positive feedback from both downtown workers and vendors, attracting people to the recently remodeled City Hall Plaza for midday gatherings in the sunshine.

The food truck program is a key component of Bellevue’s Grand Connection program, which, along with the signature pedestrian crossing over I-405, aims to connect downtown through cohesive and inviting public spaces. Projects in the program also include the expansion of Meydenbauer Bay Park, key connections to Eastrail and the presentation of exhibits, concerts and programs all along the corridor. The projects are all aimed at creating a more vibrant, accessible and dynamic downtown.

Food trucks are a vital part of the local business ecosystem, showcasing the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of their owners. But many note it can be a challenge to find a consistent and successful location in downtown Bellevue. Food truck programs that prioritize marketing, visibility and the right amenities can help local food truck vendors succeed.

“Having tables and chairs in the plaza makes the space more welcoming, so customers can relax and enjoy their meals.”” said Rosario Alessio, owner of L’Italiano, a food truck serving Italian pastas and sandwiches. “Food trucks don’t just serve food. They help create a sense of community by bringing people out of the buildings and into public spaces.”

Tables and chairs, lawn games and opportunities to take photos next to the giant #BVUE letters helped create a welcoming environment to eat lunch. The city is exploring more potential programming for the plaza in the future.

The Washington State Food Truck Association partnered with the city to establish the food truck program. The organization has played a crucial role in establishing food truck programs throughout the region, supporting local business owners and fostering downtown and neighborhood vitalization efforts. Such programs have successfully created engaging, vibrant public spaces that foster a sense of community and connection.
