Beavers are important to this park. Although damage to nearby trees may be surprising to park guests, beaver dams create important habitat for lots of other species. In fact, beavers have such a significant effect on the ecosystem that they are known as a keystone species. New trees and shrubs will eventually grow in the place of the dead or damaged ones in a natural cycle.
While we usually leave these amazing animals to themselves, sometimes beaver activity damages important park infrastructure like roads, bridges, and culverts. When this happens, Bellevue has a permit to work with a qualified contractor to manage water levels. In extreme situations, we may also hire a licensed trapper.
