BelRed open house May 22 offers glimpse of future

The BelRed area is transforming at a rapid pace, with major roadway improvements, commercial development and light rail construction all underway. The public is invited to attend an open house where the city will provide updates on all the projects and programs. It’s also an opportunity for the community to ask questions and provide input on the BelRed transformation.

The event takes place 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the Global Innovation Exchange building, Room 231, at 12280 NE District Way (this new street is just north of Northeast 12th Street, accessed from 124th Avenue Northeast).

There will be handouts, displays and staff from the city’s Transportation and Planning and Community Development departments, as well as from Sound Transit, to discuss the changes. Topics will include:

  • Transportation projects and streetscape plans for 124th Avenue Northeast, 130th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Spring Boulevard;
  • Economic development information about existing creative places and an opportunity to provide input on desirable new food, retail and creative businesses;
  • Public art opportunities along 130th Avenue Northeast and elsewhere in the BelRed area;
  • Information on the BelRed vision and an upcoming “look back” effort to examine progress since plan adoption and what refinements could be made in the future; and
  • East Link light rail construction timeline on the six stations being built in Bellevue, including two in BelRed.

The vision for the 900-acre BelRed corridor was adopted in 2009. It calls for reshaping the area as a sustainable urban development by 2030, with 10,000 new jobs, 5,000 new housing units, transit-oriented development, new parks, restored streams and other amenities.
