City of Bellevue Utilities is offering virtual classes as part of King County Library Systems (KCLS) Virtual Class calendar. These live workshops via Zoom will focus on reducing waste and properly sorting recycling and composting, reducing food waste, and non-toxic cleaning tips.  If you would like to attend, registration is required. All ages are welcome; however, this class is geared towards adults and children over seven years old.  Check the KCLS Virtual calendar for specific class dates and times: https://kcls.org/featured-events-online/. Please email recycle@bellevuewa.gov to be added to our interested participant list for future classes as well.

We will be teaching the following workshops:

  • Non-Toxic Cleaning:  Learn tips for safely cleaning at home and how to make your own non-toxic cleaners using common household items. This workshop will also cover how to make smart choices when purchasing cleaning products and how to disinfect when needed. We will discuss safe use, storage, and disposal of purchased cleaning products to protect our families and environmental health. All participants will receive a PDF of recipes for making additional non-toxic cleaners at home, proper disposal guidelines, and more.

  • Reduce Wasted Food:  Watch hands-on examples of how to make the most of your food at home including how to store foods for maximum freshness, what labels on food containers mean, how to turn leftovers into lunch, and more. Participants will also learn how to properly sort different types of takeout containers. All participants will receive electronic resources such as recipes using unusual parts of food (i.e. carrot tops), a storage guide for ways to store fruits and vegetables to make them last longer, and information on what can go in your compost bin in Bellevue.
  • Become a Super Sorter - Proper Disposal and Handling of Unwanted Items: Are you unsure what items belong in your garbage, recycle, or compost, or what may need special handling? This class will cover City of Bellevue waste sorting at home, as well as items that are prohibited from garbage and how to handle them. Also find out where your items go after they leave your home. We will share the best ways to get rid of items you no longer want including tips for reuse, donation, and safe disposal. Participants will learn how to safely dispose of bulky items, hazardous materials, electronics, and medicines.
