Highland Community Center is offering the following programs this April.  These classes are designed and adapted for adults with intellectual disabilities.

BINGO - Each week the BINGO game will be hosted on Zoom. Real prizes, real fun!  Register Online

Join us for Kelsey Creek Farm's Virtual Sheep Shearing event on Wednesday, April 28, 10-10:30 a.m.  This event will be streamed online, and you can participate from the comfort of your home.

 

Farm Tours

If you've always wanted a tour of the farm to meet our resident farm animals, this is your opportunity! Learn interesting animal facts and discover what it takes to be a farmer. This program is designed for household groups only. Each tour will include two household units with no more than five members from each household. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Painting With a Chicken

 

Create a painting with a chicken! Your child will receive a painting done by one of the chickens at Kelsey Creek Farm. Your child can add their own decorations with art supplies you have at home, such as crayons and markers. We will include stickers and a picture of the chicken artist at work! Farm Animal Pen Pals

Are you curious about what Kelsey Creek Farm's animals are up to? Sign up to be a farm animal's pen pal and receive a letter from one of our resident animals. This activity is best suited for children 4-10 yrs. Choose from one of the following animals:

 

Farm Animal Activity Book

Discover the world of farm animals from the comfort of your home. This activity book teaches children about goats, sheep, cows, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks, and bunnies. It includes puzzles, games, and lots of pictures of Kelsey Creek Farm's animals! This activity is best suited for children 4-8 years old.  Register Online

 

Farm Diorama Play Set

Bring the fun of Kelsey Creek Farm to your home with our new Diorama Play Set! You will get a collapsible diorama that includes one felt board for play and one background scene for your child to color. The kit includes six plastic animals and four felt animal cut-outs (animals and colors vary). For your toy animals, we've included four popsicle sticks to make a pasture, a feed trough made of real animal feed from Kelsey Creek Farm, and green playdough for creative play. You will need to supply crayons or markers and one piece of tape (preferably duct tape). This activity is best suited for children 4-8 years old. Register Online

 

Kelsey Creek Farm Sticker Collage

Go wild with stickers with our new farm sticker collage. Finish coloring in the background and add all kinds of stickers to bring your farm to life! Your collage includes one background of Kelsey Creek Farm, a sheet of farm stickers, a sheet of garden stickers, and four stickers of real Kelsey Creek Farm animals! Lake Hills Greenbelt Ranger Walk - Interested in a weekend activity that's both fun and educational? Bring the whole family to the Lake Hills Greenbelt Ranger Station for a ranger-led walk! Every Saturday from 2-3 p.m., join us for a mild 1-mile nature hike through the Greenbelt's trails and discover the season's myriad of flora and fauna. Wear your favorite weather-appropriate outdoor clothing and shoes, and feel free to bring personal wildlife-viewing gear (e.g. binoculars or magnifying glasses) to further enjoy the park. If you're feeling especially energized, continue on to the Larsen Lake trail loop and use your newfound knowledge to explore. We'll be heading out rain or shine, so come prepared to learn and have a great time! Black Bears - April 7, 2021 -  Bears can be a surprising sight in parks and neighborhoods, given their size and elusive habits, but are an important part of our local ecosystems! Join our program to learn all about bears and better understand the reasons behind their often unexpected appearances, as well as some ways to ensure a safe and beneficial coexistence. We'll be venturing out on a Ranger-guided walk through the Greenbelt's trails, with plenty of distanced activities and fun! Signs of Spring - April 21, 2021 - Spring is finally here in Bellevue, and with it, lots of new plants and animals in the parks! Explore the season's exciting new life, from the budding of trees to the re-emergence of all sorts of critters. We'll head out onto the trail to learn about this incredible season, and end with a spring scavenger hunt to show off your newfound knowledge. Whether it be April showers or clear skies, we'll be having a great time outside--be sure to dress for the weather! Ranger-Led Hike at Lewis Creek Park - Join a Bellevue Park Ranger to explore the natural and cultural history of Lewis Creek Park. Look for signs of local wildlife and learn what to do when encountering animals in the wild. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. This hike's difficulty is rated as easy (1 mile with approximately 50 ft elevation change). These free, in-person programs require pre-registration by calling 425-452-4195 or emailing LCVC@BellevueWA.gov. Tracking Down Tracks - Join a park ranger on a hike to learn Bellevue's animal signs! We'll look for prints, feathers, and even scat to see what's been happening in the park. Wildlife Walk: Bears - Springtime in south Bellevue means roaming bears. Come walk along while we discuss the biology of bears and how to reduce conflicts! Sunset Stroll - When the sun sets and the dark of night creeps in, Lewis Creek Park comes alive! Join a park ranger on a hike through the evening woods to learn about the different nocturnal and crepuscular species that call the park home. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, as well as good shoes and warm clothes for the journey.   • April 2: Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring - Join a boy and his dog as they explore nature and take a stroll through the countryside, greeting all the signs of the coming season. In a series of conversations with everything from the melting brook to chirping birds, they say goodbye to winter and welcome the lushness of spring.
  • April 9: Bee Heartful - When Willie Wasp steals Bentley the BEE's favorite scarf, it really stings. But Bentley has the whole garden buzzing as he keeps his heart in the right place with love and kindness. 
  • April 16: The Hugging Tree - This book tells the story of a little tree growing along on a cliff by the vast and might sea. With the help of one little boy's kindness and compassion, the tree grows until it can hold and shelter others.
  • April 23: Flowers are Calling - In rhyming and poetic form, this story shares the marvels of natural cooperation between plants, animals and insects as they all play their part in a complex web of interactions. 
  • April 30: I'm Done - This story explores the value of perseverance at a level perfect for very young kids. The darling illustrations capture the sweetness of Little Beaver's attempts at perfecting his dam--and the triumph of his eventual success. 

Ranger Hike: Mysteries of Mercer Slough - Bring the whole family to join a Ranger on a guided hike through the Mercer Slough Nature Park. This kid-oriented program aims to educate kids and their parents about the Nature Park while discovering the birds and animals that call the Mercer Slough home. The hour-long nature walk ends at the channel bridge in the middle of the park. Ranger Night Hike: A Slough of Senses - Awaken your senses and step into the nocturnal world for a guided hike into the Mercer Slough Nature Park. Exploring the park after the sun has set will certainly prove to be a unique and memorable experience for the whole family. Dress warm and don't forget a headlamp or flashlight. Silver Sneakers - SilverSneakers Classic allows students to move through exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of motion and activities for daily living. SilverSneaker Circuit is an exercise class by combing cardio and strength to improve cardio-respiratory fitness for the students. Students are also focused to improve reaction training and coordination.

Yoga Level 1 - This online class is for beginners who want a strong, safe foundation in alignment yoga. You will learn body awareness and develop flexibility, balance and strength plus be given tips for creating your own personalized yoga practice! Students with injuries or health conditions will learn modifications to practice safely. The class joyfully integrates other aspects of a well-rounded practice, such as breathing, meditation and health and nutrition tips. Register Online

Lunchtime Yoga - Take a mini spa-break from your day! This on-line class will teach you how to physically de-stress by releasing tension in your neck, shoulders, wrists, hands and spine. Mindful Movement - Beginning Tai Chi Exercise - Using the principles of Chi Kung (Qigong), Tai Chi and Soft Style Martial Arts, along with simple yoga, students in this online class learn how to stretch and recharge. Martial Arts Fitness - Increase your strength, flexibility and cardio while learning and utilizing basic martial art skills from Hapkido, Taekwondo, and Aikido. Bellevue Climbing Wall - Spring Break Day Camp - Spring Break Climbing Camp is right around the corner! Book your child's spot in our week long AM (9am-12pm) or PM (1pm-4pm) climbing adventure. Cardio Fun with Joan - Join Joan and friends from the comfort and safety of your home for a cardio workout that encourages and motivates you to have the best workout ever. Enjoy a supportive community of new friends to work out and interact with real-time and an energetic instructor to lead the way. This virtual Zoom class is designed for you to increase your heart rate and build endurance with the use of body weight exercises. The class will include a warm-up, workout circuit portion, cool-down and stretching. Intensity can be monitored by heart rate or rating of perceived exertion. Joan offers modifications for each exercise for beginners as well as participants seeking more of a challenge. Intro to Mindfulness - This virtual class provides a practical guide to meditation as a tool to improve your sense of well-being from the comfort of your home. Learn how to befriend your busy mind, feel less stressed and be more present in your daily life. Class includes simple instructions and guided meditations to apply newly learned concepts into practice, followed by questions and answers for feedback.
