Multicultural Outreach
The city provides a range of services for Bellevue’s growing multicultural population. Connections are constantly being built to bridge gaps between diverse cultural and language groups, other community groups and the city.
Mini City Hall – a community service center in the heart of Bellevue’s most diverse neighborhood – is the hub of Outreach multicultural communications and programs. Staffed six days a week, Mini City Hall offers city and community services in a welcoming atmosphere where staff and volunteers speak a total of nine languages. Other neighborhood outreach targeting multicultural communities include:
- Cultural Navigators -- available for one-on-one live assistance at Mini City Hall during set hours.
- Foreign Language web pages -- providing essential information in Spanish, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese and Chinese.
- Interpreters – always available on request for city meetings.
- Language line phones – available during office hours at Mini City Hall and at the Neighborhood Resource Center.
- Cultural Conversations – a bi-monthly networking and discussion group for women from diverse backgrounds who want to be more connected in their community.
Cultural Conversations
The Cultural Conversations Program was launched in 2010 as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the City of Bellevue. It was initiated by women who had a desire to get better connected with their community and who wanted to enhance their knowledge and understanding of different cultural practices and world views. Monthly gatherings include women from all around the world. The events are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend.
Cultural Conversations typically meets from September to May. All meetings are held on Tuesdays, 1-2:30 p.m at the Crossroads Community Center. The 2012-2013 cycle has ended in April. Here is a list of topics of this cycle:
- A new model of building a cohesive community
- The American dream and identity
- Holiday ethnic potluck
- Genealogy: empowerment from our cultural roots and ancestors
- Rituals surrounding death, dying and funeral traditions
- The danger of a single story
- Cultural Expectations: Stress, balance and the juggling act
