At 7:21 p.m., Bellevue and Kirkland firefighters responded to several reports of an escalator collapse inside the Macy's store at Bellevue Square mall.
Firefighters arrived within 5 minutes to find there was no collapse; instead an escalator suffered a mechanical failure. Firefighters quickly determined that there were no serious injuries. One 30-year-old man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Two children and one more adult were also transported to Overlake Hospital as a precaution.
Firefighters disconnected the escalator's power and worked with security personnel from Kemper Development, owner of the mall, to ensure the area remained safe. The state escalator inspector has been notified.
Kemper Development will work with Schindler, their escalator maintenance company, and the state inspectors to determine what caused the problem.
