While video games are the most prominent example of interactive media, the industry produces more than just games for kids. The technology is also the foundation for future advancements in health sciences, education, military training and homeland security.

For many years, local companies have led the way in game development. Microsoft, Nintendo and RealNetworks lead a list of more than 150 local, noteworthy game-technology companies. The Eastside is also home to the DigiPen Institute of Technology, one of three top mathematics and video game design educational institutions it the U.S.
