Recycling Food Waste
Food waste and food-soiled paper make up about 30 percent of a typical household’s waste. Help the environment by recycling and preventing these items from going to the landfill.
You can recycle food waste and food-soiled paper in your yard debris cart. Put fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grinds and paper filters, tea bags, meat, cheese, bones, pizza boxes, paper plates and napkins in your cart with the leaves and grass.
See chart of what you can recycle in the yard debris cart. Food scraps recycling FAQs
Easy ways to collect food scraps:
- Line a brown paper bag with newspaper. Drop food scraps and food-soiled paper into the bag. When full, put the entire bag into your yard debris cart.
- Use a free food scraps bucket from Republic Services (Allied Waste). Line it with a brown paper bag. When full, put the bag into your yard debris cart.
- For smelly items, like meat or cheese, wrap them in a brown paper bag. Put in freezer. On your collection day, put the bag into your yard debris cart.
For a free food scraps bucket, please call Repulic Services (Alllied Waste) at 425-452-4762. Compostable bags fit inside the food scraps bucket and make recycling easier. Please do not use plastic bags. See places in Bellevue where you can purchase approved compostabe Biobags.
Please do not put food scraps down the garbage disposal. Many food items turn into grease and cause sewer backups.
By recycling food waste, you’ll have more room in your garbage can, and you may be able to downsize your can and save money. Check the Republic Services (Allied Waste) website for more information on food waste recycling.
