To help relieve congestion at one of the worst bottlenecks on Interstate 405, the state Department of Transportation will add lanes between 112th Avenue Southeast and Southeast Eighth Street.
For the first stage of the project, set to begin Monday, July 9, and continue through June of 2008, contractors will focus on the stretch of I-405 between 112th Avenue Southeast and Interstate 90. The project will be completed, with widening between I-90 and Southeast Eighth, from March 2008 through August 2009.
Stage 1 work will include:
adding a northbound lane from 112th Avenue Southeast to I-90;
adding a three-lane, southbound bridge over I-90;
building a sound retention wall just north of I-90; and
improving the Kelsey Creek wetland.
During construction, lane closures will primarily be at night, to avoid slowing traffic at peak times. The Department of Transportation plans to minimize lane and full road closures of city streets, Interstate 405 and Interstate 90 as much as possible. Coal Creek Parkway will be closed under I-405 on various nights in July, August and September.
