FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, August 23, 2007

I-405 widening could get noisy

Crews working for the state Department of Transportation this week began potentially noisy repairs to the concrete roadway on Interstate 405, from Southeast Eighth Street to Coal Creek Parkway.

The concrete work in both directions will continue through late fall, depending on the weather, and is part of the I-405 South Bellevue Widening Project. It’s designed to improve traffic flow on one of the roadway’s most congested stretches. Some of the pavement is more than 40 years old and has significant wheel ruts.

Last week, notices were sent to residences and businesses along the construction area, informing them about the potential for increased noise from concrete grinding and equipment such as compressors and generators. Work will be done at night to minimize traffic congestion, reduce the risk of vehicle accidents and protect the safety of workers.

Jobs will include replacing damaged concrete panels (starting Aug. 20), repairing joints between the panels (starting Aug. 27) and grinding concrete to smooth damage from studded tires and other wear (beginning in early September on the southbound lanes and in mid-September on the northbound lanes).

For noise complaints and comments during night work, call Rob Harris at 206-841-2862, or Jodie Dilbert at 425-761-1518. During business hours, contact Barbara Ramey (425-401-4143) or Amy Creekmore (425-301-2023). During construction, comments also can be made on the WSDOT Construction Hotline at 425-456-8585.

This week, in addition to the pavement repair, workers will prepare to expand the Interstate 405 bridge over Coal Creek Parkway and widen the northbound I-405 on-ramp from 112th Avenue Southeast.

Closures of northbound lanes are being limited in order to reduce the impacts from drivers seeking alternate routes during around-the-clock lane closures on northbound I-5 in Seattle. Construction closures affecting I-405 traffic in Bellevue this week include:

  • Monday through Thursday nights, crews will close up to three lanes of southbound I-405 from Southeast Eighth Street to Interstate 90 for pavement repair, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each following day.
  • On Thursday night, crews will close the southbound left lane of I-405 between Coal Creek Parkway and 112th Avenue Southeast from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday for electrical work.
  • At the I-405/I-90 Interchange on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, crews will close the southbound I-405 on-ramp from westbound I-90 and one lane on the southbound I-405 ramp from eastbound I-90 from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each following day. These closures will allow crews to modify the ramps.

The WSDOT I-405 South Bellevue Widening website offers details about the project and allows users to sign up for e-mail updates.
