Fire crews responded this morning to a residential structure fire in an Eastgate neighborhood. Flames had engulfed a carport and the fire had spread to the adjoining structure. Fortunately, the three people living in the rental home were able to escape without injury.
The fire occurred in the 14800 block of Southeast 46th Street at around 4:30 a.m. Initial 911 calls indicated there was an explosion along with the fire. Fire crews did find a ruptured barbecue grill propane bottle among the fire debris and it was probably the source of the explosion.
It is not known whether the rupture occurred before or after the main fire, and fire investigators will look into that detail.
There were no injuries to firefighters or occupants, but there may be one pet cat missing. No official estimate is established, but the damage to the home appeared to be extensive. One car was also destroyed by the fire.
