FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, October 11, 2010

Councilman to return home from hospital

Chelminiak talks during news conference.Bellevue City Councilman John Chelminiak is expected to be discharged from Harborview Medical Center today after three weeks of surgeries and other treatment for injuries he sustained when attacked by a bear on Sept. 17.

He looked forward to returning home. While he is not in a condition to attend tonight's council meeting, he expects to soon participate in meetings from his home, via teleconference.

On Oct. 6, Chelminiak participated in a television interview, and recounted his harrowing experience with a black bear near his cabin in eastern Washington.

"I heard the brush on the side of the road rustle and the next thing I heard was the exhale of the bear," Chelminak said, recounting his ordeal. "And in a split second I saw the bear coming and she just launched right into me."

See video of Chelminiak's news conference obtained from KOMO TV. A separate segment features an interview with Dr. Matt Klein.
