When the curtain rises on the Bellevue Youth Theatre stage on Aug. 21, the audience won't see another local production of an old classic. "Candyland Incorporated" is a brand new musical with lyrics and score by a 18-year-old man who just graduated from Bellevue High School.
Inspired by Broadway giant Stephen Sondheim, Ben Wipple put together a show about a game designer who gets lost in his own game world. "Candyland" will show at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 and 22, at BYT, 16661 Northup Way.
Amanda Watson, 16, who attends Interlake High School, is directing the show, while another 16-year-old, Brianna Massie of Bellevue High, is music director and choreographer.
As one would expect, young people usually act in shows at the Youth Theatre, but manager James McClain said it is rare for teens to direct or choreograph. Wipple has serious aspirations as a composer, set to attend Cornish University this fall and major in theater arts.
"This is a project unique for BYT," McClain said.
The show features a dozen cast members ranging in age from 14 to 18. Teens also fill all of the technical roles and were responsible for fundraising for the production through garage sales and raffles.
"Candyland" is suitable for ages 8 and up. Admission is by "pay what you can" donation. For tickets, call 425-452-7155.
