Bike sharing programs, popular in Europe and growing rapidly in North America, will be the focus of two upcoming events in Redmond and Seattle.
Bike sharing does not mean two people on a bicycle; it's a system where people have access to bicycles for short-term renting.
The Bike Share Expos will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the Discovery Center in Seattle (101 Westlake Ave. N), and from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Redmond Town Center in Redmond.
Three vendors will be on hand each day to display their self-serve bike check-out systems. A program in Paris features 20,000 bikes available through a similar system and the trend is said to be spreading to cities such as Washington, D.C., Montreal, Minneapolis and San Francisco.
Interested people are encouraged to bring a helmet and try out the bikes, talk to vendors and look at the different systems. Co-sponsors of the events include King County, Seattle, Redmond, Vulcan, Redmond Town Center, Cascade Bicycle Club and REI.
