Walking downtown is promoted

Walk Downtown posterWalk 10,000 steps a day for 10 weeks. That's the Walk Downtown Bellevue challenge for 2009.

If you work or live in downtown Bellevue, you're welcome to participate in the summer walking campaign that began Thursday, June 25, and will run through Sept. 3. Last year, more than 1,500 Walk Downtown Bellevue participants logged 70 million steps and 35,000 miles.

To start you off on the right foot, the Bellevue Downtown Association is offering free pedometers, an easy web-based step tracking program, prizes, lunchtime entertainment, a walking map and a healthy dose of motivation.

You can register for Walk Downtown Bellevue and pick up a free starter kit, with free pedometer, at City Hall, Foot Zone Bellevue (10640 Main St.), BECU (200 Bellevue Way NE, Suite 1A), Bellevue Downtown Association (500 108th Ave., Suite 210), Live at Lunch Concert (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon-1:30 p.m., starting July 7).

Snap on your pedometer, and walk to: lunch, your haircut, the park, buy groceries, see a movie, discover downtown. You will reduce your carbon footprint, improve your health and reduce downtown congestion.
