Request a Public Defender

You have the right to have an attorney represent you on any criminal charge. If you do not have the money to pay for an attorney, you may qualify for the appointment of a public defender. You must complete a financial packet, which details your finances, to prove you are eligible for representation by a public defender.  The packet is available at the front counter of the Bellevue Courthouse, which houses the East Division of the King County District Court. Your financial packet should be completed prior to your arraignment.

You may meet with the public defender screener, to find the best public defender to represent you, any time after a charge has been filed against you in the District Court, whether you have been arraigned or not. Screening for a public defender takes place at the Bellevue Courthouse on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The financial packet must be completed prior to meeting with the public defender screener. You will not be screened unless the packet is completed.

If you do not speak English or have difficulty with it, there are several community resources which may be able to assist you with translations.
