A 48-year-old Bellevue woman died Thursday evening, apparently struck by a bus right after she gotten off at her stop on Northup Way.
At 6:35 p.m., on March 15, Bellevue Police and Fire personnel responded to a Metro bus/pedestrian accident collision on the 1000 block of Northup Way. Medics were on the scene within minutes and immediately attempted CPR on the woman, but could not revive her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was a regular bus commuter and had just arrived at her bus stop. She stepped off the bus, then it pulled away. The driver, a 25-year veteran with Metro, told investigators he heard a thud and stopped the bus immediately. He saw the woman lying on the pavement and phoned 9-1-1.
It is unknown at this time how she was hit by the bus. There were three other passengers on the bus at the time of the accident. This was the victim's regular route and she was known to the driver and the other riders. The area was well-lit and the pavement was wet at the time of the accident.
The State Patrol was called to perform a commercial vehicle inspection, which is standard procedure. The bus driver was transported to the hospital for tests, which is also standard. Alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor.
The street was closed in both directions between 173rd Avenue Northeast and Northeast Eighth Street for several hours for the investigation.
The King County Medical Examiner will release the name of the woman after an examination. Immediate family was notified.
