FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Council appoints Ernie Simas to fill vacated seat

Simas' term to begin after swearing in on April 3

In a 5-to-1 vote Monday night, the City Council appointed Ernesto (Ernie) Simas to fill the Position 5 seat vacated by Vandana Slatter. The dissenting vote was from Councilmember Conrad Lee, who voted for Jared Nieuwenhuis. Simas will be sworn in to office at the April 3 council meeting.

"I am thrilled to have been chosen for this opportunity," incoming Councilmember Simas. "I look forward to continuing our great tradition of having vibrant, diverse and well maintained neighborhoods, fostering a growing economic environment and continuing to make Bellevue and the Eastside a 'best place' to live."

Simas was selected from a total of 43 city residents who had applied for the vacant seat. The council had narrowed the candidate slate to eight finalists prior to Monday night's meeting. Last month, the council was unable to come to a decision on the appointment. A majority of four votes for a single candidate were needed to fill the seat.

Simas is chief operating officer for GIA Enterprises and has served on a number of boards and commissions in Bellevue over the years including the Civil Service Commission, past chair of the Transportation Commission, Bellevue Downtown Livability Committee co-chair and the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.

Simas' term will run through certification of the November General Election.

The Position 5 seat became available when Vandana Slatter resigned in January after being appointed by the King County Council to represent the 48th Legislative District in the state House of Representatives.

The ballot for the November General election will include the Position 5 seat along with the Positions 2, 4 and 6. The elected councilmember for Position 5 term will be sworn in once the election is certified by King County Elections through the original term date of Dec. 31, 2019.

Bellevue operates under a council-manager form of government. The council is made up of seven councilmembers who are elected-at-large and serve staggered four-year terms. The councilmembers, in turn, select a mayor and deputy mayor from among themselves.
