Two segments of the East Link light rail project will have impacts on Bellevue: I-90 Segment and Overlake/SR520 Segment. These segments bookend the East Link alignment with the South Bellevue, Central and BelRed segments being constructed within Bellevue city limits.
The I-90 segment includes seven miles of light rail construction from the International District/Chinatown station located in the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel to the East end of the East Channel Bridge. The work is located in the existing center lanes of I-90 and includes guideway installation, tunnel and floating bridge retrofits for light rail train operations and two stations.
The two stations are the Judkins Park Station and Mercer Island Station.
The Washington Department of Transportation and Sound Transit are collaborating on the I-90 Two-Way Transit Project to provide full-time HOV lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic on the outer I-90 roadways and new direct-access ramps for transit and HOVs on Mercer Island and in Bellevue. This project prepares the center roadway for the future East Link Extension.
In early June 2017, a new HOV lane in each direction of I-90 between Mercer Island and Seattle will open. The center roadway express lane will close to allow for East Link construction.
Overlake/SR 520 Segment
The Overlake/SR 520 segment is approximately 1.8 miles of light rail construction along the south edge of SR520 from 136th Place NE to the Overlake Transit Center. This segment includes two at-grade stations.
The two stations are the Overlake Village Station and the Redmond Technology Center Station.
