The busy downtown intersection of Northeast 10th Street and 112th Avenue Northeast, and a one-block section of 112th, will close for 16 days beginning Saturday, Aug. 1, as crews complete the approach to a new bridge over Interstate 405.
When the overpass is completed by the state Department of Transportation later this year, Northeast 10th Street will connect downtown with the burgeoning medical district east of I-405. Last year, the city extended Northeast 10th Street from 116th Avenue Northeast to the east edge of I-405. The new roadway is expected to ease congestion on Northeast Eighth Street.
112th Avenue, just west of I-405, will be closed between Northeast Eighth and Northeast 10th streets, from 9 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17. Around the clock, no traffic will be allowed through the intersection with 10th Street either. Instead, through traffic will be detoured to 110th Avenue Northeast; bike traffic will detour to 108th. During the closure, driveways on 112th Avenue, between Northeast 10th and Northeast 12th streets, will be accessible via the intersection at 112th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 12th Street. Tenants and residents of properties on 112th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast Eighth and Northeast 10th streets, will have local access from Northeast Eighth Street. The sidewalk on the west side of 112th, from Eighth to 10th streets, will remain open; the sidewalk on the east side will close.
Work at the intersection includes removing the asphalt pavement and replacing it with longer-lasting concrete, upgrading traffic signals, adding a right turn lane from northbound 112th Avenue to eastbound 10th Street and building a storm water pond with extensive landscaping.
Future WSDOT plans call for construction of a new "braided ramp" that will provide direct access from the new 10th Street Bridge directly to eastbound SR 520; a separate ramp from Northeast Eighth Street will carry traffic headed northbound on I-405.
