FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, March 10, 2014

Heart and art of cultural translation

Have you ever thought you said something wrong based on another person's response? At this month's Cultural Conversations, participants will explore the complex process of communication across cultures and languages, and within the same culture.

The meeting, titled "The Heart and Art of Cultural Translation: How Culture, Language and Perception Impact our Communication," takes place 1-2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, at Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St.

Cultural Conversations is a women's group that meets approximately every six weeks and seeks to build community connections and cultural understanding. At this month's meeting, life coach, consultant and small-business owner Debbie Lacy will lead a discussion about layers of communication, both verbal and non-verbal.

She also will examine how factors in understanding social or interpersonal relations differ from culture to culture, person to person. Following a short presentation, participants will have an opportunity to share stories in small groups and to use new communication tools.

Lacy has led the Eastside Refugee Immigrant Coalition for several years and has worked with the Eastside Human Services Forum. She is passionate about bridging cultures and improving communication. She believes people communicate with their hearts.

Cultural Conversations was launched in 2010 as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the City of Bellevue. It was initiated by women with a desire to get better connected with their community and enhance their understanding of different cultural practices. Gatherings include women from around the world. The events are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend.
