Cultural Conversation focuses on American dream

As the United States becomes more diverse, the definition of the American dream may be changing. Bellevue women will explore the evolving nature of the American dream at a Cultural Conversations session on Oct. 16.

Cultural Conversations, a women's group launched by the city's Neighborhood Outreach office in 2010 to connect Bellevue women of all backgrounds, meets about every six weeks at the Crossroads Community Center. The Oct. 16 meeting will be 1-2:30 p.m.

Paula Matthysse, outreach director for the Eastside Community Network, will lead the conversation and facilitate discussions. How do we see ourselves as participants in the American dream? For those of us who were born and raised here, has the perception of the American dream changed? What does the American dream mean to those who have a new life in this country?

Participants will share stories and explore immigration, civil rights, diversity, racial equality, history and perspectives on individual identity and community connections to the American dream.

Local women with a desire to be better connected with their community and enhance their knowledge and understanding of different cultural practices and world views asked for the development of Cultural Conversations. The meetings are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend.
